Day 163

el2_163

This is my buddy Zack's oldest child, Caleb, chillen out on the couch at the studio in Atlanta. I dropped by to hang out with Zack while in town en route to Japan and came packin'. The 4x5 that is. This is the first of several frames I like. (The ones that are still drying are my favorites)

I figure this is just about any kid in their current natural habitat (somewhere electronic).

Day 275

so day 275 marks my return to the daily. here's the deal... i have a few i can post. the problem is i've just shot 35 rolls in europe and just sent the film off today and don't exactly know when i'll get it back..otherwise i'd catch up and keep rolling. i'll figure something out, but there may be a hiccup or two here and there. i'll try (for my own sanity) not to let it drop.

so...the return photo is this stephanie. one because seriously thats the longest neck i have EVER seen. secondly, it seems fitting since she is coming in town tomorrow evening. its a nice welcome home.

so here is long neck girl.

Day 227

[background music // david karsten daniels]

so i've been watching a LOT of "Home Movies" lately. this has caused yet another man-crush on H. Jon Benjamin. that man is brilliant and only brilliant and i'll smack your face if you disagree. or i'll think about doing it and maybe say it aloud.

a friend and i have been going back and forth on our facebook walls spewing home movies quotes willy nilly silly billy.

i recently purchased a camera via ebay AND finally got a copy of Robert Frank's The Americans. This has created in me massive desire to shoot shoot shoot. its mostly the Frank but new toys are fun as well. The camera I got (well...am awaiting) is a Konica Hexar that is about the same size as the Leica M series and has a lens that people say its basically a lens on par with leica, which says a lot. the camera itself has its pros and cons but i have to say that im very excited about it. it is, at its core, auto focus which is one element i'm excited about. so long as it does the job i require, im happy to give over an element of control to a camera that has a good reputation. its what i'll be shooting (possibly exclusively) in europe (i'll get to that) and i WOULD take my lomo (mostly for posterity, its the only camera i brought with me on my last euro excursion) but on a recent trip to portland, oregon (siiigggghhhh. what a place. and i miss h+g, and to some degree the cats..but less so them)) ALL the lens elements just Fell out. all of them. magically lomo said they'd replace it..i just need to send it in. (note: the lens elements, etc are wrapped in cling film and in the film compartment. just in case you like that info)

so me getting The Americans in is perfectly timed for a recently planned trip for eastern europe. i'll be very inspired by Frank on this trip, undoubtedly. a lot of the images in the book arent necessarily outstanding on their own merit..which is REALLY encouraging to me...i love shooting photographs that have further context than themselves. i WILL say however that in every photo i saw in the book there is something that will grab you somehow. that is a huge thing to say and thats why he was by-god Robert Frank.

so me and john yam and garrett simpson have planned a trip to eastern europe for september. anyone have any suggestions? (other than jealous insults, of course)
the plan so far is, in no order, hungary, croatia, austria, czech republic, romania, slovenia, slovakia, possibly poland, possibly ukraine, etc etc.

im down to hear any suggestions on places to go, sleep, eat, photograph, travel to, or scam on hot euro babes. kidding about the euro babes.

anyway...here is today's post. its a sort of everyday life (ie boring) shot of jason computing toward the end of the day

irony: a recently inspired bout of 35mm-shooting-desire, while taking a picture of jason, who only shoots digital (more or less), shot on a 4x5. none of it adds up. im okay with that.

Day 205

it was inevitable. i was bound--destined even, perhaps-- to post a photo of rob flexing.

(test shot for new equipment)

so rob said to me after i posted this that i have taken more interesting shots for electric lion, and i certainly concede that. the point of posting this is its Really stupid. stupid often, and in this case, is fun. (weird wording, eh?)

this shot is more a snippet of ordinary life. nothing special but its fun for me to look at. 100%.

Day 151

this is my first official speed graphic portrait. i've shot plenty of 4x5 but have always lusted after a handheld large format so i could realistically bring it with me wherever instead of just in the studio on a huge stand. featured is, shockingly, jamric.

for illustrative purposes, here is a shot of me holding the camera, very soon after i took this shot, which the guys will very likely mention on their brand new blog.

i suppose im a tiny part of a larger trend of people enjoying older cameras, processes, and approaches to taking photographs. of course there are tons of people who learned on this stuff and still use it and it is just now time for me to clue in to its greatness.

i had more to say but i have derailed and

Day 134

we were going for a sort of cheesy 50's housewife thing, but only so much as i like her outfit and thought i'd be funny. there wasnt much in the studio in the way of props...so there is a plate, a spatula, and i think a potato.

anyway...yeah..its azurae again. not to bombard with them but a) i love so many of these and b) i am waiting on more film.

Day 129

By the way I have not given up I am just in the absolute middle of nowhere for mothers day and effectively have no real access. Consider this a place holder for the weekend. I have been shooting though. Thats the important part. In fact today while shooting my granddad and sister working the bees. Yep. Working the bees. I need to get a great shot of my gdad while I am here. Note to self: do that.

[ED]

back in town, have film..expecting more soon. AND I shot Lots this mothers' day weekend. 100% pumped about everything i shot. all family.

okay so here's beeje. trying to look intense and brooding maybe. who knows
